Polymer Electrolyte Fuel Cells have high-power density, rapid startup, and low-temperature operation (around 80 to 120 C), and so are ideal for use in applications such as energy transport and battery replacement. The electrolyte used is a proton conducting polymer. This is typically a perfluorinated polymer, though other hydrocarbon-based membranes are under development in an attempt to reduce cost or to enable operation at temperatures approaching 200 C. The catalytically active layer sits adjacent to the membrane, supported on a PTFE treated carbon paper, which acts as current collector and gas diffusion layer. For operation on pure hydrogen, platinum is the most active catalyst, but alloys of platinum and ruthenium are used when higher levels of carbon monoxide are present (CO is a poison in all low temperature fuel cells). Spring is here, which means that the summer heat is already here in Arizona. We all know how essential having an effective air conditioning system in the home is to our comfort during an Arizona summer - as well as how expensive it can be to cool a home through the long, hot days, when temperatures can reach 122 degrees Fahrenheit!
Replacing that old air conditioner or upgrading to a central air conditioning system instead of using window units could save you a lot of money this summer and for many summers to come. (more…)

Biomass has been a main energy sources in the world since the beginning of civilization. It has been important in development processes, including early stages of industrialization in several countries. In Sweden, for example, the first concerns about preservation date from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, resulting from the recognition of the central role played by forests in energy provision. Biomass was also essential in the initial development of the iron industry in Sweden and, later on, the same happened in Brazil, where charcoal is still largely utilized in iron reduction. Biomass remains a major source of energy in many countries. (more…)

Ceiling fans are a popular room addition; comfort can be easily obtained with a flip of a switch. An immediate cooling breeze is created by an electric motor with rotating blades. That motor uses electricity. Ceiling fan motors are not large, but energy can be wasted. Read on for tips on operating your ceiling fans so that you can be comfortable and save home energy.

If a space is occupied on a predictable schedule, you can use either timeclocks or setback thermostats to turn the conditioning units on and off. A setback thermostat is a heating thermostat/ cooling thermostat with an internal timeclock that changes the space temperature settings at different times.
A setback thermostat normally operates through the thermostat controller circuit of the conditioning heating units. (more…)
