Fossil fuels, had a broader impact in current society, still oil is the one that have far reaching effect. Oil, in all its forms is the fuel that every modern means possible and draw goods and people moving around the world. Coal Research and Development has been a particular casualty of these Research and Development cutbacks. Once again, the United States and Japan account for most of the public Research and Development in this area. The U.S. effort focuses particularly on enhanced oil and gas recovery as well as on coal combustion, whereas Japan accounts for most of the government coal gasification and conversion Research and Development expenditures among the IEA countries.
