We had expressed our disagreement with Biofuels and tell them also that the European Union also wants to distance themselves from them. Now the FAO (United Nations Food and Agriculture) has been enacted against biofuels in its annual report. The main problem with biofuels is that the growing of them, occupy spaces before for food, and to create more spaces and woodlands are only by cutting down forests.
With the global food crisis that is taking place, the future of biofuels are nothing but bad news. And instead of doing good to replace fossil fuels, do more damage. Increase food prices, scarcity, and increasingly cut down trees to get more areas under cultivation.
“Biofuels present both opportunities and risks. The result will depend on the specific country context and the policies adopted,” said Jacques Diouf, Director General of FAO.
FAO calls the report a review of policies and subsidies to biofuels, as production has grown to more than triple between 2000 and 2007. An alarming case is the United States, which previously produced 60% of the corn consumed around the world, and now 25% of all that it intended to biofuels. This increases the price and the food does not reach many parts of the world.
“Increased production and use of biofuels will not necessarily contribute to reducing emissions of greenhouse gases as much as previously assumed. It can also lead to the drawbacks of biofuels,” he says in the report.
“Changes in land use, for example deforestation to meet growing demand for agricultural products are a major threat to soil quality, biodiversity and greenhouse gases emissions,” said Diouf.
