The European Union Biofuels Distance

I just read a very good news via Reuters. And is that the EU has decided to distance themselves from biofuels usage.

As we here at The Green Blog and often Erenovable, biofuels were a good idea that went astray. They are indeed a renewable energy, “but at the expense of what? Of deforestation, increased food prices, and possible food shortages in the future. Not to mention how undeveloped countries such as Brazil and Argentina are ruining their economies and ecologies because of the monopolization of crops for biofuels.

It’s time to choose …. Food or Fuel?

Reuters says the “heads of EU energy put in the spotlight on Saturday an agreement with Brazil on biofuels at the close of a three-day meeting in Paris in which they distanced themselves from the controversial goal set by the block alternative fuels. ”

Made no change in the proposed legislation for biofuels, but acknowledged that the EU failed to adequately communicate its plans that 10 percent of fuels used in land transport was renewed in 2020.

According to French Ecology Minister Jean-Louis Borloo, be misunderstood to suggest that biofuels would only renewable fuels to which they referred. The others he referred are electric cars and fuel cells. According to them are almost nonexistent now, but will have an important role in 2020.

He added Borloo than 18 months ago biofuels were an excellent idea, but its value is not so clear. Something very true, we ourselves were excited, more than a year ago, biofuels emissions, but soon saw the disasters that were bringing.

The lawmaker Claude Turmes proposed to prevent drawbacks of biofuels. “My analysis shows that the only country that can buy a sustained substantial amounts of biofuels at the moment is Brazil,” Turmes told Reuters. “An agreement of this kind would set a precedent, with strict criteria in both social and sustainability issues. At the same time, Brazil would have to demonstrate that it can stop the deforestation.”

Hopefully this will be respected.
